How to Clean Old Building Bricks (Without Damaging Them)

Give your cherished brick collection a new lease on life

📋 Blog Summary

Got a tub of old, dusty building bricks from your childhood or a garage sale? Don't throw them away! In this ultimate cleaning guide, you'll learn how to safely clean old LEGO® and building blocks using simple household items—warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush—without causing any damage. We walk you through every step, from sorting and soaking to gentle scrubbing and air drying. Plus, get special tips for cleaning bricks with stickers and electronic components. Follow this method and make your old bricks look brand new again!

🛠️ What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these supplies:

  • Warm water (not hot—this is crucial!)
  • Mild dish soap (avoid harsh chemicals)
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush or sponge
  • A large bowl or basin (or your sink)
  • A colander or strainer
  • Soft towels
  • Optional: White vinegar, microfiber cloth, mesh laundry bag

📦 Step 1: Sort Your Bricks

Start by sorting your bricks:

  • Separate by color – Dark and light colors should be washed separately to prevent dye transfer (yes, some older bricks can bleed color!)
  • Check for stickers – Bricks with stickers should be cleaned differently (more on this later)
  • Remove any batteries – If you're cleaning electronic elements, take out batteries first

This is also a great time to spot any bricks that are cracked or damaged beyond repair.

💧 Step 2: The Gentle Soak

Bricks soaking in warm soapy water

Fill your basin with warm water—and we really mean warm, not hot. Hot water can warp plastic and ruin your bricks forever.

Add a small squirt of mild dish soap and swish to distribute.

Place your sorted bricks in the soapy water. Let them soak for about 15–30 minutes. This loosens dirt, dust, and grime without aggressive scrubbing.

🧪 Extra germ-fighting power: For second‑hand bricks, add ¼ cup of white vinegar to the water. It's a natural disinfectant that won't harm the plastic.

🧼 Step 3: Gentle Scrubbing

Scrubbing bricks with a soft toothbrush

After the soak, it's time to scrub—but gently!

Use your soft-bristled toothbrush to:

  • Gently scrub the tops and sides of bricks
  • Pay special attention to the studs (those little bumps on top) where dirt collects
  • Clean inside tubes and crevices
💡 Pro tip: For stubborn dirt in small spaces, an old (clean!) toothbrush works better than anything fancy.

What to avoid:

  • No wire brushes or abrasive scrubbers – they'll scratch the plastic
  • No harsh chemicals – bleach, acetone, or strong cleaners can damage or discolor bricks
  • No aggressive scrubbing – you're cleaning, not sanding!

💦 Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly

Once scrubbed, rinse your bricks thoroughly.

The easiest method: place them in a colander and run cool water over them, swishing with your hands until all soap is gone.

Soap residue left on bricks will attract more dirt—so rinse well!

🌬️ Step 5: Drying (The Most Important Step)

Bricks drying on a towel

This is where many people go wrong.

Do NOT:

  • ❌ Put bricks in the dryer
  • ❌ Use a hairdryer or heat gun
  • ❌ Leave them in direct sunlight (which can fade colors)
  • ❌ Assemble them while wet

DO:

  • ✅ Lay bricks on a soft towel in a single layer
  • ✅ Pat them dry with another towel
  • ✅ Let them air dry completely—usually 24–48 hours
  • ✅ Flip them halfway through drying to ensure all sides dry

For faster drying, place them near a fan (not a heater!).

The mesh laundry bag trick: Some collectors put bricks in a mesh bag and run it through the gentle cycle of their dishwasher (NO heat dry!), then air dry. This works, but we recommend the hand-wash method for safety if you're unsure.

🏷️ Special Cases: Cleaning Bricks with Stickers

Bricks with stickers need extra care:

  • Spot clean only – Don't submerge them in water
  • Damp cloth method – Use a slightly damp (not wet) microfiber cloth with a tiny drop of soap
  • Gentle dabbing – Dab, don't scrub, around sticker edges
  • Instant drying – Pat dry immediately

If stickers are peeling, consider removing them before cleaning and replacing with new ones afterward.

⚡ What About Electronic/Light Bricks?

For bricks with lights, motors, or batteries:

  • Never submerge them in water
  • Wipe with a damp cloth only
  • Use a dry toothbrush to gently clean crevices
  • Ensure completely dry before reinserting batteries

🧹 How to Keep Bricks Cleaner Longer

Once your bricks are sparkling clean, here's how to keep them that way:

  1. Store in closed containers – Dust is the enemy
  2. Wash hands before building – Natural oils from skin transfer to bricks
  3. Keep food away from building areas – Sticky fingers = sticky bricks
  4. Regular dusting – For displayed sets, use a soft makeup brush or compressed air

📌 The Bottom Line

Old bricks can absolutely be restored to their former glory. With patience, gentle soap, and the right technique, you can clean everything from garage sale finds to beloved childhood collections.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
